Staff motivation is of great importance in the healthcare sector, as it largely determines whether the goals of the organization will be fulfilled and how satisfied patients will be with the level of services. Therefore, it is extremely important that the management of the organization has developed a leadership style that encourages and motivates. A leadership like that is considered effective, as it achieves the creation of a pleasant working environment with strong ethical principles. In this review, the conceptual framework of effective leadership and human resource motivation is outlined. Subsequently, primary research of the international literature is examined, for the effect of the characteristics and the functions of effective leadership on the motivation of medical staff. The study of these researches showed that effective and transformational leadership concern a necessary condition for motivating human resources. However, the management of health units should pay close attention to some fields, such as burnout, human resources rewarding and creation of a pleasant working environment.
