Renal involvement in Adamantiades-Behcet’s disease

A case of Adamantiades-Behcet’s disease with renal involvement is described. The patient presented with oral and genital ulcers, uveitis and erythema nodosum and was found to have the HLA B51 antigen. Laboratory investigation showed microscopic hematuria with most of the erythrocytes being dysmorphic, while the renal function was within normal limits. On renal biopsy, light microscopy revealed mesangium cell proliferation, while immunofluorescence studies showed C3 deposition, findings consistent with mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis. Treatment with glucocorticosteroids and azathioprine resulted in complete remission of all the disease manifestations, including microscopic hematuria.
