Kidney transplantation from living donors is the treatment of choice for patients with end-stage renal disease, while donation from living non-related donors is becoming increasingly acceptable and widespread as a practice in our country. However, kidney transplantation from living donors, particularly in the case of the emotional donor, raises a number of ethical concerns and issues. The psychosocial evaluation of potential emotional kidney donors-recipients has emerged in recent years as an important solution for the effective management of these ethical issues. In recognizing the importance of psychosocial evaluation, the first significant step in our country was the establishment of the Emotional Kidney Donor Committee. The aim of this article is to describe and evaluate the work of the Committee, which operated within the framework of the Hellenic Transplant Organization (EOM) from September 2019 to April 2024.
Key words: Chronic kidney disease, Emotional donor, Emotional donor committee, Kidney transplant.
