Arch Hellen Med, 43(3), May-June 2026, 390-397 SPECIAL ARTICLE Mental health indicators and the completion of psychiatric reform in Greece E. Konstantinou,1 I. Apostolakis,1,2 P. Sarafis1,3 |
Mental health refers to an individual's well-being on an emotional, psychological, and social level. Maintaining mental health is equally important as maintaining physical health, as it directly affects a person's quality of life and their ability to contribute to society. The assessment of mental health is achieved through the interpretation of indicators that aid in measuring well-being and the prevalence of mental disorders within a population, contributing to the development of targeted intervention policies. Prevalence, incidence and mortality indicators that are associated with mental disorders, are critical tools for measuring mental health and evaluating the population's overall condition. The crude suicide rate in our country exhibited an upward trend during the economic crisis; however, it remains relatively low, as does the prevalence of depressive symptoms compared to other European nations. The psychiatric reform efforts in previous years were primarily focused on deinstitutionalization, whereas the new Law 5129/2024 aims at establishing a National Mental Health Network, seeking to address gaps that had been identified.
Key words: Health indicators, Mental health, Prevalence, Psychiatric reform.
