Preoperative education has been applied for many years to a wide range of medical conditions for patients' treatment, improvement and rehabilitation. Preoperative education and information for patients has been generally recognized as an essential component of rehabilitation programs. It is referred to as any form of education provided prior to surgery and is aimed at increasing the required knowledge, as well as developing appropriate health behaviors. Preoperative education is gradually being recognized as a beneficial tool, which enables us to cover various aspects of the patient before and during the surgical procedure. Preoperative educational interventions have been applied, successfully, to help reduce postoperative pain, opioid use, and perioperative anxiety. Recent studies have shown that preoperative education can positively influence postoperative recovery by improving postoperative pain management and patient satisfaction. Many studies confirm the beneficial role of preoperative education, which is mainly recognized for its contribution to a significant reduction in pre-/postoperative anxiety, postoperative pain, and the length of patients' stay in health care facilities. Finally, through it, a significant reduction or even discontinuation of opioid drugs postoperatively has been observed. However, more randomized clinical trials are needed to evaluate the educational programs and the benefits of preoperative education.
