Arch Hellen Med, 42(2), March-April 2025, 196-202 ORIGINAL PAPER Medication adherence and quality of life of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus C. Charizani,1,2 K. Katsaliaki2,3 |
OBJECTIVE The assessment of the levels of adherence to antidiabetic treatment and the quality of life of the patients, as well as the examination of a possible correlation among them.
METHOD Participants included 153 diabetic patients of a private medical laboratory in Thessaloniki. We used an anonymous questionnaire which included 36 brief questions about demographics, clinical data, as well as patients' medical adherence (MMAS-4 Scale) and quality of life questions (DQOL-Brief Clinical Inventory). Statistical analysis was performed by the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), (IBM SPSS), version 23.0.
RESULTS Patients had high levels of medical adherence in anti-diabetic treatment (average=3.38/4). Regarding the results for patients' quality of life, for the dimension of satisfaction, moderate levels were found (average=3.71/5), while for the dimension of frequency the levels were low (average= 2.03/5). Finally, a statistically significant positive correlation was found between medication adherence and the satisfaction dimension (Rho=0.217; p<0.05), in contrast to the frequency dimension, which was observed to have a statistically significant negative correlation (Rho=-0.195, p<0.05).
CONCLUSIONS Levels of medication adherence to anti-diabetic treatment were estimated to be high, while moderate levels were recorded for patients' quality of life.
Key words: Anti-diabetic treatment, Diabetes mellitus, Medication adherence, Quality of life.
