OBJECTIVE The evaluation of depression, anxiety and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD).
METHOD The study was carried out in CAD patients in the Cardiology Department of "Tzaneio" General Hospital of Pireus, between March and May 2021. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the 36-item Short Form Health Survey questionnaire (SF-36) were used. Basic demographics and medical characteristics were recorded.
RESULTS Eighty CAD patients (69 men, 11 women) of a mean age of 62.5 years took part in the study. The mean scale scores were 6.53±4.45 for anxiety (range 0–18) and 6.70±4.23 for depression (range 0–18). Moderate or high levels of anxiety and depression were recorded in 28 (35%) and 32 (40%) patients, respectively. The range of mean scores for each SF-36 HRQoL scale was 34.69–58.50. There was a positive correlation between the anxiety and depression scales (Spearman's rs=0.586, p<0.001) and negative correlations between anxiety/depression scales and each of the 8 HRQoL scales [Spearman's rs from -0.652 (p<0.001) to -0.263 (p=0.018) for anxiety and -0.703 (p<0.001) to -0.271 (p=0.015) for depression].
CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of moderate or high anxiety and depression levels in CAD patients was high and HRQoL was affected. Anxiety and depression were both significantly and negatively correlated with HRQoL.
