The treatment of Graves' disease differs according to a variety of factors related to its manifestation and course. The main goal of any therapeutic approach is to eliminate or reduce the pathophysiological symptoms. The clinical manifestations of the disease, therefore, constitute the main guidelines for its treatment, with additional factors being age and gender. The ideal treatment for this disease achieves restoration of thyroid function, prevention of recurrence, and avoidance of hypothyroidism, as well as treatment of the ocular disease. Three treatment axes can be applied: drug therapy with antithyroid drugs, treatment with iodine-131 isotopes, and thyroidectomy. The aim of any treatment regimen is to reduce the symptoms of the disease until normal thyroid function is resumed.
