Artificial intelligence (AI) is taking center stage in facing the COVID-19 pandemic. AI based algorithms are contributing to the development of vaccines and potential forms of treatment. In addition, various AI applications, such as robots, are being employed in interaction with the patients, replacing human contact and applying social distancing. This paper examines the case of AI and its contribution to the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the issues of protection of the patients' personal data, according to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Implementation of AI technology in the health sector must be approached from the perspective of ethics in relation to science and technology.
